Tae Kwon Do For Children

There are many reasons to start a Tae Kwon Do program for your children, maybe your looking for a place to channel your child’s energy or you heard that Tae Kwon Do helps children gain focus and confidence. Many professionals believe Tae Kwon Do helps foster traditional family values such as, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control & indomitable spirit. All are tenets of Tae Kwon Do and taught at Adirondack Martial Arts Center daily in addition to our Olympic Style Tae Kwon Do techniques.

We also feel self-defense is so important in today’s society. Tae Kwon Do gives children the ability to stand up for what is right while gaining the confidence they need in today’s classrooms. Students learn the value of hard work through there training while earning different belts, martial arts merit badges, academic stars and other achievements in our specialized children’s curriculum. The movements of Tae Kwon Do develop coordination, increased strength and flexibility which, as you know are very important to a child’s development.

The foundation of Adirondack Martial Arts Center is in its self-defense value. We are very careful to teach children to use common sense before self-defense and never be abusive or offensive. The result of our program is a self-confident child who does not need to bully or show off to other children.

How do I choose an instructor?

There is an old Chinese proverb that says, “It’s better to search three years for the right instructor, than train three years with the wrong one”. When choosing an instructor remember that your children are going to be spending at least two hours a week with this person, who has an instant “roll model” status with them. Therefore look for the following qualifications:

  1. Does the instructor have a degree in elementary education? This is important because teaching the “subject” of Tae Kwon Do is teaching. There is a difference between a black belt and an educated black belt when it comes to a child’s development.
  2. Is your instructor a true “Master”? If your instructor is at least a 4th degree WTF black belt than they have trained for the appropriate amount of time.
  3. What other qualifications do they have? Have they competed and what affiliations do they belong to?
